What an incredible day at the 2nd Annual Swain Middle School STEAM Expo! Yesterday, Swain Middle School was buzzing with curiosity, creativity, and community as students explored hands-on activities and career opportunities alongside partners from across Western North Carolina.
From creating dyes with local plants to launching catapults, packing for the moon, exploring fish anatomy, playing student-designed video games, and even watching glassblowing and blacksmithing demos—our students got a real-world glimpse into the amazing futures that await them.
A huge shoutout to the GEAR UP program for organizing and setting up this incredible event—we couldn’t have done it without you!
A big THANK YOU as well to our amazing partners from App State, WCU, UNCA, SCC, AB-Tech, the Museum of the Cherokee People, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Roper Mountain Science Center, and many more for making this day unforgettable. Swain Middle is proud to connect learning with opportunity—and we can’t wait to do it all again next year!

📣 1st Annual Service Learning Day at Swain Middle School! 📣
The energy was high from the start, with packed hallways during our Student-Led Conferences—a big thank you to all the parents and guardians who joined us this morning to support our students!
This afternoon, our focus shifted to service, and our final Club Day turned into a powerful Service Learning experience. Students in the Board Game Club shared laughter and connection with residents at a local nursing home. The Hunting & Fishing Club rolled up their sleeves to help clean up a trout farm. Our Photography Club partnered with the Chamber of Commerce on a special project, and the Spirit & Drama Club performed a fun rendition of Freaky Friday, raising $150 to support the reopening of our local theater!
Several other clubs joined forces with Swain Clean to beautify our school grounds and parts of our town, showing just how much impact a day of service learning can make .
We are so proud of our students and staff for living out what it means to learn through service. Swain Middle School is a place where kindness, leadership, and community shine bright!
