Today the second half of fourth grade had a great time at the Oconoluftee visitors Center exploring the Farmstead. They particularly enjoyed the blacksmithing, and learning how life was in the late 1800s and 1900s. Many thought they would enjoy this way of life.

Today half of the Fourth Grade class visited the Oconoluftee Visitors Center for the Mountain Life Farm program. We had a blast! A little rain couldn't slow us down. We made pottery, and learned the Legend of the Mud Daubers. We explored an old farmhouse, and learned about making quilts. Making dinner bells in the Blacksmith shop was a group favorite! The scavenger hunt in the Visitors Center taught us many things, including how important corn was, and about the tragedy of the Trail of Tears. Today we discovered that even though President Theodore Roosevelt helped establish the National Park system, the National Parks belong to all of us, and they are our responsibility to protect. We are so grateful for the organized, kind and helpful Rangers. They helped make this special day one to remember.

Poster titled “Bus Driver Appreciation Week!” with the subtitle “Thank you for all you do for the students of Swain County!” The design features eight cartoon-style illustrations of school bus drivers smiling and leaning out of yellow school bus windows, arranged in two columns. Each panel shows a small group of drivers with varied ages, hairstyles, glasses, hats, and clothing, all drawn in a friendly, slightly exaggerated caricature style. A school logo with a maroon “S” and a devil mascot appears on the right side near the bottom. The lower right corner includes a “NAPT Love the Bus Month” graphic with a heart. A long list of bus driver names appears in small text across the bottom, along with the note, “Created with the assistance of AI.” The background shows a road with a yellow center line fading into the distance.
This is a reminder that Swain County Schools will be closed on Friday, February 13 for a scheduled, mandatory teacher workday.
